Unsecured Internet purchases could prove disastrous
Students who regularly make online purchases from campus computers or from the university's wireless network might want to take some precautionary steps before punching in their credit card numbers. “If [students] are using the encrypted wireless [network], I think that's fine," said James Shook of Technology Support Services. “[But] I don't think I'd be doing that on the visitor's [network], which anyone can get on."Students can obtain a password for the secured wireless network at www.nss.appstate.edu. Appalachian State also offers free anti-virus software with built-in firewall and anti-spyware protection at www.antivirus.appstate.edu. Students transferring data should do so from secure Web sites, which are signified by “https" in the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or a secure lock graphic, said Director of Technology Support Tom M.

Shopping surge can’t salvage slow-growing holiday sales season
Target Corp., Macy's Inc. and Lowe's Cos. fell Wednesday in New York trading after a weekend shopping surge failed to salvage the slowest-growing holiday sales season in five years.Sales at stores open more than 12 months rose 2.8 percent last week from a year earlier, the International Council of Shopping Centers and UBS Securities LLC said in a joint statement today. The results prompted the group to lower its forecast for November and December sales growth to “a tad below" the 2.5 percent it was predicting.Shoppers making last-minute purchases pushed sales up almost 20 percent over the weekend, according to Chicago-based ShopperTrak RCT Corp. Consumers burdened by higher gasoline and food prices and a deepening housing slump held off on buying gifts for much of December as they awaited steeper discounts, sending sales lower for four straight weeks, ShopperTrak said.“This consumer is spent out," Howard Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, said in a Bloomberg Television interview.
Suicide kills more than war and murder
Lithuania posts 70.1 male and 14.0 female suicides per 100,000, while Russia has rates of 61.6 and 10.7, according to the WHO. Another factor was that such countries had undergone extreme changes. "Even though many people have benefited from those changes, many people still feel left behind,'' Prof Mishara said. "People don't kill themselves because they want to die,'' he said. "People kill themselves because they can not see any hope to feel better in the future.'' Share this article What is this? .

Spending habits: Americans at all income levels tighten their belts
Until recently Shannon Palmer, like many Americans, spent money freely. She assembled a nice wardrobe, took four vacations a year, and ate out often. But now, as she listens to economists discuss the likelihood of a recession, she recognizes the need to get her own finances in order. "I'm young and I feel mostly secure in my job, but I have a good deal of debt on my back," says Ms. Palmer, a publicist in Andover, Mass. As a step toward fiscal responsibility, she has begun a "very aggressive" plan to pay off student loans, a car loan, and credit-card bills. She has also started to save. "This is a time for action when it comes to people taking responsibility for their personal finances," she says. "This is just the motivation I needed. It's forced me to look at things differently." Looking at things differently is a theme running through conversations of Americans at all income levels these days as they review their spending habits.

Airlines have strict policies regarding rebooking flights if you get sick. One South Bay viewer turned to ConsumerWatch after spending months getting the runaround from one airline. Roland Borges hadn't been to India in 30 years. So when his 94 year old mother wanted to visit her homeland for a family reunion, Borges was thrilled to take her. "We went to see where she was born and where my grandparents lived. It was a wonderful experience," said Borges. But at the end of their trip, his mother was hospitalized with pneumonia and an embolism. They needed to postpone their 22 hour flight home on Virgin Atlantic. "I tried to contact their customer service in Mumbai and find out what kind of paperwork I needed," said Borges. He called repeatedly, but to no avail.
